Once again Micromax comes up with a new handset. This time it’s a new Ninja; Micromax A89 Ninja. Unlike other Ninja series smartphones it equips a dual core processor and Android 4.0 ICS OS. It’s MediaTek MT6577 chip once again coupling two 1.0 GHz clocked ARM Cortex A9 application processor cores and PowerVR SGX531 GPU. Amount of RAM is also unknown. But don’t expect more than 512 MB. It sports a 3 MP rear facing camera. It looks like there is no LED flash.
Micromax A89 Ninja looks like Canvas 2 but the display size is small. Touch sensitive 3 Capacitive buttons are there. Connectivity features are unknown. But Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, micro USB are common features. It looks like along with GPRS/EDGE Class 12 connectivity it supports HSDPA speed up to 7.2 Mbps. Hookup and some other bloatwares are already installed like other handsets. ROM size of the device looks like 4 GB. Micro SD card slot is there with up to 32 GB support.

Price of Micromax A89 Ninja is unknown. It looks like it’s going to be the cheapest dual core smartphone. Currently Xolo A500 is the cheapest smartphone at around Rs 6500. It looks like Ninja A89 will be available in less than Rs 6000.

Kolkata price as quoted by Micromax Store is Rs. 6999/- (All Inclusive). Is A91 happening within a fortnight and is the wait worth. Need to buy wife a new phone, her first ever Android. Do you think this will be a good choice?
@Tathagata have you visited Micromax store in Kolkata? In case it’s Rs 6999 it will be made available in other retail stores at around the same price tag. Anyway, you could wait for A91 but I guess it will costlier. I do not see anything wrong in A89 but the camera of A91 is 5 MP over 3 MP in A89.
I called up the Micromax Store in behala and got the price from them. Yes only contention would be the camera but I am OK with 3MP by and large as it will be used only for Facebook postings on the move. Was looking for something around 6K but getting lured with the given feature set A89 to extend my budget. Sealing the deal for A89 going by your outlook. Will get the set by the weekend and update. Got Spice Mi-495 Virtuoso finally from local Spice Hotspot. Wonderful phone overall. Nice built quality, ultra-thin, bright qHD display, dual core, 512 MB, 4 GB internal and 1750 mAh battery. All at 10,500/- Got diary cover and scratch gaurd free also. Very happy with the phone’s performance except the battery does not last the full day under heavy usage like Facebook Chat, WhatsApp, Gaming and Photo Clicking & Upload. Installing Juice Defender however improved the situation a bit wherin the battery lasts about 14 hrs or so. Responsive customer support over phone & e-mail. Tried out both for sorting out battery issue. Overall very satisfied uptill now.

Honestly speaking, most of the low-cost Android phones deliver less battery backup even if the size of the battery is big. For example, Micromax A110 has 2000 mAh battery but it lasts for at most 4 hours if you continuously play games in it. Since A89 has smaller display, smaller battery will last for max 4 hrs. This is the case for any local brand. You guessed it right slightly bigger battery of A91 will consume battery faster and will end up at around 4 hrs. It’s similar in all Micromax, Karbonn, Spice or Lava handset.

In less than Rs 6000 there is no smartphone model with good camera. Branded products lack LED flash and local products come with poor camera sensor. If you can increase your budget to Rs 7300 you will get Spice Stellar Nhance with 8 MP fixed focus camera and LED flash. It’s the best camera phone in my opinion in less than Rs 8000 price segment.
