Xolo X1000 is officially launched at Rs 19999. Now the first question comes in to your mind whether it’s fair to tag a single core droid at such high price or not. I can’t explain that as the first Xolo smartphone Xolo X900 was launched at around the same price which is now available at around Rs 14500. Few dual core products from big-guns are also there i.e. Samsung Galaxy S Advance, HTC Desire SV etc. Now you might find yourself confused whether it’s a good idea to opt for Xolo X1000 or still you should consider buying something like Micromax Canvas HD or Xolo Q800 that are available at few thousands cheaper price and similar spec sheet. Best alternative will be Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos which is just one thousand costlier than Xolo X1000.
Quad core droids from big-fishes are still too costly. For example consider Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini which is from Samsung. Spec wise it’s not as brilliant as Xolo X1000 but gives you a good feeling just because it comes from the house of ‘Samsung’. Local brands are there but quad core Cortex A7 based MediaTek MT6589 doesn’t make a world of difference over dual Cortex A9 chips like STE NovaThor U8500 or U8420. Heating might be an issue associated with this handset. Although 2.0 GHz is not over-clocked for Intel Atom Z2480 and the droid is expected to deliver stable performance at that clock but I think lesser clock would have been better to reduce heating problems if there is any.
Now the most interesting point is if you buy a Samsung or HTC or Sony smartphone you will not get HD display, 8 MP camera (in most occasions), 1 GB RAM. Additionally, Xolo X1000 packs a processor from Intel. Nowadays Intel runs majority of computers and laptops. Xolo X1000 In addition 1 GB RAM makes multitasking really faster and buttery smooth. Therefore, you have no room at all to show any doubt about the handset. But I do think, around Rs 15-16k price tag would have been more appropriate for this handset.
Let’s get some idea about the hardware and software-
1. Display
Xolo X1000 packs 4.7 inch TFT transmissive LCD display manufactured by Sharp and supports 720×1280 pixels HD resolution. Since display size is small it has higher display ppi, 314 in fact which more than sufficient. You must not cry for full HD 1080p display resolution at this price point. Although Umi, JiaYu, Iocean and few other Chinese vendors will be selling full HD display smartphones in less than 15k I do think Xolo is more reliable with HD resolution. You don’t need full HD in real life as human eye can’t distinguish between HD and full HD. Therefore, display quality is good but misses Corning Gorilla Glass 2. Scratch resistant coating is a much needed feature especially if you are paying almost 20 thousand for a smartphone. Accelerometer, proximity, magnetometer, gyroscope sensor are there for better user accessibility.
2. Chipset & Processor
Powered by Intel Atom Z2480 2.0 GHz processor it’s the fastest processor available in market till date. Although it’s single core processor it enjoys Hyper Threading which is similar to Intel Core i series processors with Turbo Boost. By it might generate excess heat. I can’t confirm you but chances are too high. Since there is 1 GB RAM you can expect excellent performance. Out of the box it runs Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich but further OS upgrade will be rolled out. For gamers 400 MHz PowerVR SGX540 single core GPU is there.
3. Storage
Xolo X1000 equips 8 GB internal storage and micro SD card slot. You can expect 5 GB free storage in internal memory with at least 1 GB free space in phone storage and 4 GB in internal memory. Internal memory distribution is not transparent as of now but something similar is always on.
4. Camera
There is a 8 MP rear facing camera unit along with 1.3 MP front camera for video chat. Primary camera records full HD 1080p video at 30 fps. BSI sensor should be there for low-light video recording. Other camera extras are LED flash, auto focus, burst mode, panorama mode, touch focus etc.
5. Battery
Xolo X1000 houses 1900 mAh battery. You can expect 9.5 hrs of talk time in 2G and 3G network. Talk times provided by this handset sounds really impressive. Additionally you can expect 38 hrs of music play and 5 hrs of full HD video recording. In real life these values will be lesser as these are measured values in optimum condition. However, these are still good if 70% is offered in real life.
6. Dual SIM
Without any surprise it’s a dual sim standby device other recent smartphones.
7. Entertainment
Native music, video player are there. But it lacks additional sound enhancement. I do feel there should be a sound enhancement like SRS, DTS or Beats Audio. Music player supports all common audio codecs like MP3, MIDI, WAV, 3GPP, AAC, AAC+. It also supports full HD 1080p video. Video formats like MPEG4, H.263, H.264, DivX are also supported.
8. Data & Connectivity
Xolo X1000 is preloaded with Intel XMM6268 modem which supports HSPA+ speed up to 21 Mbps. Other necessary connectivity components like Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi with tethering and micro USB are there. Bluetooth should have been v4.0 and Wi-Fi Direct, NFC should be there especially at around Rs 20,000. A-GPS navigation support using Google Maps is supported by the device. Presence of HDMI out is not clear from Xolo official website.
Pros of Xolo X1000
- 2.0 GHz processor with Hyper Threading, I strongly feel the processor with 1 GB RAM can perform really well
- 8 GB internal storage, micro SD card support (not considering Umi X2 or other Chinese brands as they have 32 GB ROM)
- 1900 mAh battery, 9.5 hrs talk time and 5 hrs of web browsing time
- 8 MP camera with full HD video recording, burst mode at 15 fps
Cons of Xolo X1000
- Single core GPU, PowerVR SGX540
- Might generate excessive heat
- No JellyBean out of the box
- Single core CPU may sound outdated, will definitely fail to match up with high-end droids
- Intel x86 architecture compatibility with apps?
